Hello,
I used to have a big old silver arrow and it was a pretty jumpy thing. Quite eager to explore the world outside of its tank. I've watched them jump when startled in the LFS as well.
But my Jar has only ever tried jumping out of a bucket I put him in to move house (when he was much smaller).
I just wondered if others had noticed this because Jars are pretty rare here so I've got nothing to compare it to.

Also,

In the last three weeks he's developed this habit of swimming at a forty five degree angle from vertical. I thought he might be sick. But no signs of any ailments (added Melafix anyway) I thought he might be looking at the plants that were floating on the surface (took them out) and he still does it. It seems to be something he chooses to do rather than something which is not controlled. Sometime he doesn;t do it and it can happen either to the left or the right. And he can change axis at will. Anyone else encountered this?

My green aro swims at 45 degrees. See pix attached

It started swiming like that after eating a particularly large frog ... it does not bother him but he swims at funny angle. Supposedly this ailment is related to swim bladder ...

If it is the swim bladder then I say you can try venting him but I really only recommend that experienced ppl attempt this.

Thanks for your replies.
I wondered if it might be the swim bladder but I would expect that if something was wrong with it it would be random whereas this seems to be totally under his control.

He seems perfectly happy so I'm not going to mess with him and risk making him ill or damaging him.

you are right. they can swim horizontally cos i see him doing it - especially if he lunges for food
