i just wondering. are knife fish that really scared of their owners?? every time i go around the tank he goes crazy for a hiding spot. like if he hates me or sumthing. any advice???

o he has the habit of when he is hiding. he stays completely still. like if hes dead. once i tap the glass once of twice, he gets up and hides.??? why???

heres a pic of him, behind that piece of stone, thats his favorite hiding spot.

yea they're shy. is he new to the tank? it'll take a while before he really starts moving around (if he does) or u can always take away his hiding spots if u really want to see him swimming around. mine usually stays in one spot no matter when i see him. the only time he swims around is at night since knives are nocturnal.

oh so that explains alot. i have had him like 4 months now and hes been like that ever since. maybe more time. thanks anyways for the advice.

When hiding they can lay there and not move, but they are almost always fine. As far as hiding it may be the individual fish. I have 2 atm, one hides when I approach and one stays around begging for food.

Every time you tap the glass, you scare him. It sounds as if you've conditioned your knife to view you as a potential predator, spurring it's instinctive reaction- hide and get the hell away. If he's sitting there chilling, just watch him. Sit next to the tank and read a book or something- when he gets used to seeing you around and NOT getting scared each time he sees you, he may move around a bit and be more active for you.

Knifes love dark places, but the only place for him to hind is a shady spot. Mostly, the more dark, secreive caves there are, the more the fish feels safe to come into the open world.
He is nocturnal and probably prowls the tank at night.

he still looks really small. the only way i ever got my bgk to trust me at that size was to hold food in my hand and stick it in the tank for 30 minutes in his cave. once he came out to eat a few times from my hand, we never had problems again. he still needed a cave, preferably totally enclosed save for one entrance/exit.

what is your tank stocked with?
