If you know your koi, yes.. they can go for even more.
Definitely. There are several shops in my area that sell them for thousands. There's a shop in the bay area that brings in monsters from Japan, they list for $10-15k. Quality koi is not a poor man's game.

And he's selling most of those from $120-$250. For those sizes, I'd say it's a fair price. Although, I'd rather spend that price on a much smaller fish and get a better quality pattern/body shape.

What pond-mates can you put with koi?

And how many gallons per koi? Parents just bought a new house and was thinking about a summer project building a pond lol

I'd say pretty much any fish that can tolerate colder outdoor winter temperatures, and anything that won't beat them up. Koi are very docile fish and won't bother anybody. Although they may try to eat some very small fish once they get large.

As for pond size, I'm sure you'll get a lot of different opinions on this. Me personally, I say if you want to keep koi for the long run, a bare minimum of 1500g and at least 24-30" deep. It's not like an aquarium where you can upgrade to a bigger size later, so you need to go as big as you can fit/afford from day one.

If i want a really good lookin pond, how should i go about attaining one? should i get professionals or should i attempt to build it myself?
