like Ian stated, the vinegar test works-i have used it and have had no deaths. I went to a local rock yard and just picked out what i wanted-i got 290 lbs of river boulders for 26 bucks.. i couldnt believe how cheap it was, and looks great in my african tank. Btw, if you go to lowes or home depot avoid any kinds of rocks that are preformed--those contain sealants and chemicals that will kill your fish.. and avoid any metallic looking rocks (though i have some pink granite in my tanks and granite is fine)..
