Are Large Water Changes Killing Fish? Small vs Large Water Changes -

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I live in the tropical country. And i am using well water

6.4 right out from tap. 7 when stable

I'd think it would settle a little higher than 7, but even 6.4 to 7.4 would only be around 30 ppm and that wouldn't be enough to cause a problem. I don't think you'll have any problem filling up the tank at a faster rate. You could gradually increase the flowarate as you feel comfortable.

In order to aerate the water when filling up the tank, I would turn the valve partially-closed at the end of the hose (tank end) so the water spreads out like from a garden hose and hits the edges of the waterline hard creating a lot of turbulence.

I was under the impresion that my tap contains so little to no oxygen.

Fish can tolerate higher CO2 levels as long as O2 isn't depleted so the two are related. Aerating the water will decrease CO2 and increase O2 if it's low so I don't think there will be a problem.

Sorry the ph settle after 24 hours would be 7.2 not 7.

I place the hose to my top filter while fillin the water so the water falls from the output.

I tried to fill the water faster and the fish seemed to get stressed out a bit. The rays was breathin a bit faster than they normally do, but then it settled out after 24 hours more or less

Well yesterday i did like 60% wc and thats what i normally do for the weekly wc. But the diff is the rate i filled the water.

Perhaps next time i will try to do less % but with faster rate and see how they react?

I wish I knew more about rays ... I've seen CO2 poisoning in small fish before so I know what it looks like with them but not with larger fish or rays especially. When I first got a CO2 canister for my planted tank I turned it on for a couple minutes and tried to locate a small leak. When I looked up two of the fish were darting, one was swimming upside down, I believe one was swimming sideways .. it was crazy. They quickly began acting drunk and started passing out. I only managed to get one out and figured the rest were dead. But most of them came around within an hour or so. I had added a powerhead with a venturi which must have made a big difference.

Now that I think of it, maybe you should try a powerhead and use the venturi to aerate the water while filling the tank.

Yea my aro didnt bother at all just the rays acted a bit unusual.. hahah
