Are larger tanks easier to care for?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
define what you consider big and small, my 200g and 55g are maintence free, my 500g is a nightmare (still getting it the way i want it)

Larger bare bottom tanks are more easier to care for.
Try gravel vac the entire footarea of 6x2.5 every week.
You would get pissed. I'm pissed already.

If humans are accepting problems with their abate tanks, my admonition would be to super-size their filtration. I absolutely anticipate bigger tanks are easier to maintain. I accept a 20 that is a pia but my 72 never gives me issues...easier to advance baptize ambit in a bigger tank.

Equal IMO!

Regardless of size, I view difficulty in maintenance from easiest to most difficult as:

Bare Bottom > Gravel > Sand > Planted > Brackish > Marine (although I do not keep marine and go by my sisters experience)

I always use sand substrate. Every time I have used colored gravel sooner or later it chips to smaller pieces and looses some of it's color too. My biggest tank is 55fl. Was thinking of getting a 'long and low' 175gl from a place that customizes. Not sure about what to do for the stand. Thinking of making that myself, lots of really good DIY threads on here to learn from.:D Thank You every one for your opinions and advice on tanks, from smaller to larger, which are easier to care for.:headbang2 :D I really extremely appreciate all of your responses. The explainations that were given are really great food for thought too. And I do tend to 'over filter' too, but I figure it's way better than under filtering. Sometimes, 'over done' is 'well done'.:D Please post more info, opinions, advice, etc.:D

EsoxAngler, :D I don't lie about how often I do water changes. I actually find myself doing a few extra ones, now and then. Especially if some one in my house hold becomes ill,..... I figure that 'I may be next', and don't want to do a WC while being ill. I don't want my husband or one of my teen daughters to do a WC. It's just a thing with me, I don't have any one else feed them either. I guess my tanks are the one thing in our home that is considered 'mine'.:D

loaded question def...

the answer is.. they're the same. smaller tanks need more "watching" and lil' here lil' there tweeks....but maintence is usually divided up inot small amounts of time multiple days a week. Larger tanks tend to be more "stable" overall and need fewer "tweeks" but doing water changes ect is more time consumeing. and any other maintence, like filter cleaning ect ect...

I check my smaller tanks more often then my larger tanks. But neither is "easier". Good husbandry.. is just that.. no matter the size of the tank. More a question of if you want to be fiddleing with things daily but maybe for a few minutes.. or if you want to spend an hour or so once or twice a week. Most peopels lifestyle make the second option "Easier"
