If both male and female bichirs were of the same age, would one necessarily be bigger than the other? For example, would be female have more girth?

there's no recorded difference in the max size for males and females (i.e. the max recorded size is always given just for the species), so who knows if those with record size are all females or a mixture.
but it does seem females tend to grow bigger (at least in captivity) mainly because they are usually greedier feeder, and if it eats more, it'll grow more.
on the flip side, given a male and a female that eat the same amount, i can't tell you if the female will necessarily be the bigger (in terms of length) or faster growing of the two.
