Are my bichirs sick?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
still need more info tank size, filters, food u feed, times u feed, where u get ur water from (well, tap, bottle etc). Have u gotten these bichirs from the same lfs(maybe a problem with there supplier) if they have a small amount of bichir and they interbreed to much this may just be natural, how often do u clean the tank. u should take the water from your tank to ur lfs and have them test, then have them test there water so u can see the difference. For some reason i am thinking to much salt in ur water

Tank is about 100gallons, I use a eheim professional 2 outer and a fluval 4 innerfilter. As I said I feed'em hikari carnivore sinking, hikari cichlid sinking, tilapia, shirmp, and other fish as pollock and cod (no live food). I feed them every other day or 3rd day. All bichirs are not from the same lfs (don't think the supplier or interbreed is the problem). I do weekly waterchanges with tapwater and i do not add salt.

Water Parameters will help tremendously....

btw a Delhezi is just as close to an Endlicheri as it is to a Lapradei or PBB aka different species different behavior

I know about different bichirs behaviours as i keep endys, congis, laps, palmas, ansorgii, ornats too.

Anywho... I cleaned all the filters yesturday and will do a big waterchange tomorrow. Somethings gotta be wrong. Will also see if my lfs can test my waterparameters for me this weekend.

Some input:

Note that he has a bigger tank next 2 the one in matter and he uses the same food, same tapwater, temp -same everything but this problem only occurs in the small tank and never in the big one.

The only diff is that the smaller tank that has produced sick bichirs is a planttank, there's allot of plants in there. The filtration and biology must therefore be on top concidering the good machinefiltration + the plants-"biofiltration".

This is the only thing that comes 2 my mind, can 2 much plants be an issue? It sounds kinda stupid i know, but thats about the only diff in both of his tanks. One with lots of plants and one with like 1-2 plants.

And remember, there is allot of fish in that tank, this only happens 2 the bichirs. There is snakeheads, datnoids, catfish and others in the tank.

Thank you bro... its all correct :) Althought i rescaped the tanke since you saw it (not as much djungle now as then) but still lots of plants, and this problem was even before the rescape. So I dont think thats the problem either.

this will be hard but i would break down both tanks clean them with bleach and water (make sure u get all the bleach out) and then rinse again and again. I would buy bottled water to fill all the tanks(gonna cost some money) I would bleach the filters and change all the media in it so its like u are cycling again then if this problem doesnt comeback u know its either the water or something that was in the filters or tank. With this being said i wouldnt break down both at one time i would do the one with the worst problem first so u could have the new filter media running in the one tank without the problems(to get bacteria). Also before u transfer the fish i would first put them in a bucket of salt water(couple tea spoons) so if they had any of this stuff on them it would be rinsed off and or killed. Then transfer them back and forth. Oh ya and dont forget to bleach the method of transfering the water to and from the tanks.

i'm not sure what that behavior might indicate.

honestly if i saw it, first thing that comes to mind would be a bichir that has gotten picky. Are there any external signs that something's wrong, e.g. near the throat region or something if you suspect it has problem swallowing?

Thats what I think to... that she's gotten picky. When I look back I can't remember her eating so much for a time (that she's not fast enough taking food). So after some time she might just starved so much she's picky to almost anything! It's hard to make sure everybody gets foot when you feed in a tank with lots of plants and bichirs...

I've tried handfeeding her now for 2 days and she shows intrest and most of the time takes food. But she still gots problem swollowing... although she looks as healthy as she always has.

U should house that del seperately in another nursing tank to check the issue.. u would bump up the temp a little higher.. with a little salt..
