Just wondering because we have some really colorful and cool fish here that almost no one here cares about so I was wondering if they were in big demand elsewhere.
I wonder how common the sail fin molly is (in the international aquarist hobby) They are the star residents of my 29 gallon. I caught them all wild, in the peace river, 6 blocks away.I have seen one or two species in the PracticalFishkeeping magazine, but nothing in shops. I have some mosquito fish, but those are everywhere nowadays... I collected them in an estuarine lake
Think it not strange, human nature. The things we cant have are the most appealing.Don't think that just because you have nice fish in your area that everyone wants to keep said fish. I do find it strange that all the beautiful native fish that are out there, wherever you live, and yet most people tend to go for fish that are from half way round the world and ignore the ones on their doorstep. Myself included, we have some lovely natives in the uk but i don't have a single one (though i aim to one day).
I suppose asia, south america and africa are the places where most hobbyists fish come from. Is that because they're the coolest, best looking, most awesome fish. Absolutely not. Native fish in your own backyard are just as awesome, i just think most hobbyists tend to go for the exotic.
Which of course has led us over the years to all sorts of invasive species taking over and subsequent bans on fish which we are all to familiar with.
Huh, I didn't realize Gambusia are north american. They're the exact opposite of popular here, you can go to jail for possessing them. They're very destructive and invasive.I have some mosquito fish, but those are everywhere nowadays... I collected them in an estuarine lake
Mollies are pretty common.I wonder how common the sail fin molly is (in the international aquarist hobby)
Sounds cool.....how about a thread showing off your fossil collection.(the peace river in Florida, is a world famous, fossil hunting, destination) I have a collection that would justify charging a small fee, into my living room) My avatar was an area I found many, this season) Also, teeming with mollies and jewel cichlids
Fossils? Awesome. I've collected some in the UK quite a few years back.I wonder how common the sail fin molly is (in the international aquarist hobby) They are the star residents of my 29 gallon. I caught them all wild, in the peace river, 6 blocks away.

They are listed as invasive here. I sent most of the ones I collected to a university for study or observation. They're a nuisance.Huh, I didn't realize Gambusia are north american. Darters are gorgeous, I wouldn't mind some of those.Sounds cool.....how about a thread showing off your fossil collection.
Some of our native darters are quite colorful and would possibly be of interest to fish keepers in other countries.
