Are Oscars really aggressive?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I agree it depends in how they are raised. It seems if raised in a larger tank and in a community they turn out quite peaceful.

i'd say as long as your taking good care of them they're pretty peaceful. As they grow bigger they will assert their dominenec more and more. they're big boisterous fish, but i actually think that they're really friendly fish. Two males together tend to fight more than a male and female or 2 females. Do you know the sex of your fish?

What size tank are they in now?

I don't know how to sex them :ROFL:I'm completely new to Oscar cichlids (have had them for about 24 hours)... I used to have Jack Dempseys though and they bred several times so that must mean I took good care of em :D!

I have 3x 3 1/2 inch Oscars (2 albino, 1 dark) in a 90 gal tank. Their tank mates are 6x 2 inch plecos, a few snails, ghost shrimp and a few 1 inch catfish that I added to deal with the leftover pellets at the bottom.

I use a wet/dry (sump?) filter with bioballs, activated carbon, and a bunch of other things... I actually bought this filter from a friend that used it on his 180 gal aquarium, and I think it does a great job. Never had any nitrites/ammonia problems in loooong time.

I KNOW this is not a good tank size for Oscar cichlids, and I plan on getting a 300 gal aquarium really soon, probably in the next month or so. I'm really loving these fish and wanna give em the best possible environment :)
