Are peacocks suitable in a 55 gallon?

Do a male tank first, you can always get females later after you have the killer male and pull him to breed then move back to the male tank later... I have to say having a tank with multiple males is great. some days I will have all the males showing, other just a few... but the colors are great!!!!!!!!!

In my opinion a male tank is the only way to go unless you are really in to breeding You can't beat a bunch of the most colorful fresh water fish all trying to show each other up all the time .

But the thing is I am not sure what ones are males and which are females (they are only a couple inches) so I figured if I bought 6 of the same kind then I could just let them have their own species tank and see if they breed and then trade in or somethign with the rest. But I know the all male tank would be nice. Whats the best way to go about getting only males though (beside going by color) when they are that small?

some stores will sell males only with 75% being correct... ordering may help... if it is a good fish 2-3 inches may show color already... stay away from chain stores for peacocks...

The males I have started showing white tips along the dorsal fin at 1.5" They are now 2.5" and still not showing any serious color yet.

Well I think I have 2 males and 7 females and one very runt peacock (don't know how it got in there, but he is becoming my favorite since he is always out sucking up sand wishing he was a geophagus as he sifts for food). I am going to let it roll and let them breed. I wil probably get an all male tank later on, maybe I could trade some of my smaller breeder males and the rest of the females for some different males.

good luck since you are done, can I steal the thread... I got bored and all this talk so I am setting a dual 55 for fun until I get the 120s all done.

today I put the stand up and the 55. I put in the PFS and filled with water. I am letting it settle then I will finish setting it up...

My buffaloheads are mating like mad so I had to make more room for the last batch of fry to let the new ones grow...
