I just read the thread on Foods for Aros... I was just wondering must I feed pellets for an arowana to thrive? My arowana tried to eat the pellets the first time I put them in then he refused later..... I may train him next month because I have a lot of food and don't want to waste it... So, I just want to know has any of you MFKers managed to grow an arowana without pellets? If so, what do you feed it since 7"?

Thanks

Best staple there is...alot better than your super worm staple...unless you are able to feed tens of kinds of foods to provide the best variety possible, I dont see how you could do without pellets. As you can see from the sticky, boydo has such a variety, but he still has to use pellets.

I'd keep trying the pellets, mix them with whatever else you're feeding. If he's getting it in his mouth and spitting it back out, you're almost there.

i don't believe it is compulsory to use pellets. Over here aro keepers do not use pellets - live food (fish, frogs etc) and prawns (market and krill) and krikets (live or frozen).

not withstanding above, if aro takes pellets it is arguable safer in the long run as you don't run the risk of contaminating your tank + easier and less hassle as you can stock up on the pellets

PS: i don't use pellets cos my aros stop taking them

i dont feed my aros pellets i feed them variety of food like mealworm, superworm,FD krills,MP,earthworm/Nightcrawlers,Basa fillets, crickets, frogs

Ok, I will add more variety. I will try to get mom to buy me a tilapia from the market... No prawns though cos here market prawns are quite pricy.... I will also add crickets occasionally along with live ghost shrimp(de-headed) and I will try to find freeze dried food like krill. And Hao what size tank and arowana do you have?

Thanks guys

Adding 1 item to your feeding list does not make it a variety. Crickets have about the same nutritional value of super worms, basically none at all. It'll take quite a few ghost shrimp to fill your aro, possibly costs you more to buy enough ghost shrimp than it is to just buy market shrimp, especially with the pointless de-heading.

the best would probably be the more meaty stuff you can get from your seafood market. i always feed my aro pellets, kinda afraid not to feed it anything else. then it won't like pellets no more, plus it's much easier than preparing it's food all the time.

Erm.. Gshock the de-heading part is actually helpful.. The head of those shrimps poked my hand before and I am afraid it will injure my arowana's belly. I will still go for ghost shrimp because my aro is still small, a few of them will fill him up... I will get tilapia, and freeze dried krill for him.

Thanks guys
