Are pickerel nippy?

"if a fish is too big for them to swallow they ignore it. " Some one should have told that to the pickerel I found dead last evening with a fish too big for it to swallow hanging out of his mouth!

Pike are VERY aggressive. I had a grass pike in a aquarium, i dumped a dozen minnows in the tank with him. The next day all the smallerminnows were gone, and all the larger minnows had bite marks on their side from when thepike would grab them and just swim around with them in his mouth. Btw the larger ones he would just bite were about 1/2 his body length. Also pike depending on species do get very large. Some get over 4'. I caught a 36" northern last year, and thats not even a very big pike. Grass pike, and the closely related redfin stay relatively small.

I have 2 redfin and 1 chain pickerel that are about 4" in the same tank with 4 peacock bass that are 4-5". I have my pickerel eating silver sides from my hand, and they smash any live or frozen as soon as it hits the water. The pbass and pickerel actually swim around together. It may not work long term but they will have separate tanks well before it's needed.
