Are plecostomas vital to an aquarium?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Far from necessary. However if you have an algae problem and planty of filtration then ge tone because they will help with the algae.

Not necessary in the least bit. They actually produce more waste than they clean. You only need a pleco if you want one.

x2 Also depending on the type of pleco (larger ones like commons) they aren't effective at eating algae as they age. Bristles and rubber lips are good for algae but still messy. Most have them because they love them or for their looks, not algae eating.

Same here, every tank I have must have a pleco! You dont have to have them but I want them all.

They are a must have in every tank no matter what kind!

Absolutely! What ever you do DO NOT remove your pleco from your aquarium or the tank will either vanish into thin air never to be seen again or explode violently.

No fish is essential to an aquarium, in fact I loathe the old misconception that you "must" have a pleco like it is some part of the filtration that magically eats poo and craps out rainbows. Plecs are great fish that should be kept because they are interesting to keep, and fed and cared for accordingly. If you don't want one for that reason don't keep one. Any algae cleaning they may (or may not, species depending) do is simply a bonus.
