are powerheads worth buying

I have 3 really shy piranha and i am wondering if adding a powerhead to there new tank will make them more active, the are red bellied piranha and about 3 inches long.

also are powerheads noisy and can they subsitute for an air pump and i have an external for arreating the water.

should powerheads be turned of at night?

dunno about powerheads and Ps....

i leave my power heads on... I also dont have any air pumps so the inline air connection for the powerhead is all I use, its a 1200lph pump so it's pretty bubbley!

ok mate but do they make alot of noise.

welll... the unit itself is quiet, ... the bubbles are a bit noisey cos its sucking in air all you do is put the power head lower under the water mine sits about a foot under the water.. its harder for the pump to suck the air so it sucks less vs up the top where its easy for the air to get sucked in!

would it keep you awake at night or is it only noisy when close up to the tank.

doesnt keep me awake!

Its in my lounge room about 10 meters away. I can hear it if my door is open, plus im a poor sleeper so small noises annoy me. the Mrs doesnt hear it though.. *shrugs* each to their own.. just turn it off or as I said push the power head lower under water if you can. or zippy tie the tube tighter so less air can get thru. thats teh only thing that makes a noise..

ok nice on cheers mate, if it annoys me i will just turn it of, also my piranhs are really really shy fish and they dont eat becuse they are sometimes to scared,i am moving them to a big tank soon and am not going to have any decoration it in it just gravel and a powerhead ect, will this make them less shy and swim around a bit more.

dont know about P's but my powerheads seem to make my fish more active...

i also think that a powerhead will create more water current for better gas exchange hence better water quality.

ok thanks mate iwill get one within the next week for my tank, i just dont know what to put mytank on as i dont want it too high so it will avoid natural light.

Powerheads are a MUST for pygos bra....The current keeps them healthy....Powerheads are their treadmills....But to get the best gas exchange out of any powerhead, place it just under the surface....The more surface area broken means more gas exchange....Beats any bubbler in my book...O yeah, most powerheads these days are near silent.....
