are powerheads worth buying

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
thanks for your great help, its nice to find someone who know alot about piranhas as i got banned from p fury for some strange unknow reason lol

eheim aquaball powerheads are almost silent-----even when you are using them to areate water.

Having current in the tank could encourage them to be more active. If the tank isn't decorated somehow there'd be a tendency to hide.

Hagen's powerheads come with a device that works like a muffler. You won't hear the sucking sound, only the bubbles. I wouldn't discontinue the air pump.

I breathe all day. Unless you think your fish don't require air at night, why would you turn them off?

Is this tank next to your bed?? If so, move it or add some ambient noise to your room besides the air pump and the bubbles, maybe a fan.

After a while, the mechanical sounds from any tank should be soothing to a hobbyist's

ears....It's like going to the airshow and hearing a thundering B-17 Flying Fortress fly

over....When I hear these awsome planes, I think of all the missions that plane has

flown and country's it's been to....The mechanical sounds of my fishroom let me know that

yes I am in a fishroom, not a t.v. room, not a bathroom, not a kitchen, but an actual

fishroom... ....

definately need a powerhead for your Ps. you might not even need to use it to add oxygen to the water if you run HOBs and get good surface agitation. i don't use the airtubing on either of my P tanks. my AC 802 puts off a pretty good humming noise that doesn't bother me but does bother some other people. i like to place my powerheads towards the bottom half of the tank because thats where the Ps spend most of thier time.

My opinion: I love powerheads! Great for the fish, and great for the tank's environment. Water current is an absolut must, the more air the fish get the happier they are. if you are going to use one don't bother turning it off at night they are indeed virtually silent. Although how will you be using it? Because they suck everything through them including fish so make sure to put a filter on the bottom of it so it won't get plugged if you're not using it as an undergravel filtration unit. It also sounds like your fish are a bit young, give em some time, i almost think that its a good thing that they aren't tearing around the tank nipping at each other. I have kept piranha for close to ten years and the only time that they are truly active is when they are eating or being introduced to new tank mates, really they are a secluesive fish, even with a lot of current.
