Hi,

I was going to put my puffer ( Monotrete Turgidus) onto a moderately/heavily planted 29 gallon tank. I am attaching a T5HO lamp above it and there will be no hood/lid. I probably will keep the water level down an inch or two. Do you think with this tank having no lid/hood theres a chance the puffer could jump?

This is how the top of my tank will look like:

I donno if puffers will take the leap of faith, but couldnt you just get a flat hood/cover like most LFS have on their tanks?

From my experience no, but there can always be a chance they might. If your tank is not going to have a cover i suggest you at least get a glass canopy like the picture i posted below.

I think they will do fine w/o a hood or a lid. But just a suggestion with my first post ^^^^

Puffers are adept jumpers. If you keep the water level down though, you may be OK. I will be coming up against the same problem with a new tank I'm setting up. I have the puffer in my refugium right now & the water level is down... Even though she's very active, she hasn't attempted jumping out.

Well if I add any kind of hood this could interfere with the lighting. I am told glass will be alright, so I was thinking something like some glass lids to cover part of the top will be the bets bet. Although, I may look into that canopy thing. I just have to make some measurements.

Puffers are not really jumpers. My LFS has a MBU, a Fahakah, a Congo, a Hairy, a zebra, and some pea puffers all in planted tanks none with any sort of lid and they have there water levels all the way up. However anything is possible. My Fahakah has tried to jump before when he got scared and barley made 1/8th of his body out of the water lol so I doubt one even could especially is he was decent sized. But I would rather play it safe than sorry and cover that thing up. :)

I have seen all species of puffers jump to their death--small or large, doesn't matter. You can place eggcrate over the top, so as not to restrict the light or drop the water level down about 2".
