I have a male red sev. who is paired up with a female green sev. She has laid eggs several times, and I think I even had wrigglers once. But, they have never been successful. I have heard male red sevs are sterile. Any thoughts on this? Has anyone ever had luck breeding with a male red sev? I know they are a line breed from a gold. Could that mess them up for breeding?

Wow, been seeing several Red Sev threads lately. There must have been a serious uptick with vendors recently.

Yea, and I still can't find any :( :(

The fertility is lower but they are not sterile. I bred mine with a gold female. A friend did the same. Fry looked like golds.

As far as i know, red x red crosses never worked.

That's an assumption.
I guess I shouldn't have said I know they are, I should have said I've heard they are.

Have you looked into having them shipped? I see them all the time around where I live in Northern California.

When I was a teenager, all the books and magazines said gold severum males were sterile. Then I bought a pair of gold severums and within a week I had fry. I can't imagine all red severums could be sterile, but they could be so heavily line-bred/inbred (or even hormoned) that it affects their breeding.

I have a three year old male red severum right now and he's never attempted spawning with any of my female severums. He shows no interest whatsoever in breeding. He's a pretty fish but he doesn't exhibit any behavior you'd typically see in a severum. All looks, no brains. :D

From wharf i have heard, female red sevs are mostly fertile, however it seems that it is much more difficult to find a fertile male, i am growing out 4 suspected males at the mo in the hope of breeding wirh my female who i also gope is fertile as in my eyes she is stunning

Thanks for the replies. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Even if he isn't sterile, they are not very good at keeping the dead eggs out. The only time I suspected I had wrigglers, I think it was the egg fungus that took them out. Hopefully they figure it out someday.

most red Sevs are male, like 90%,most are infertile, and like EBJDS and you cant make Red Sev x Red Sev babys.
