Are Red Wolves Illegal in Florida?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Why are you asking me? I didn't write FL's laws. Ask your state.

BTW, "Trahira" is NOT only used in conjunction with Hoplias sp. There's also the Golden Trahira - Hoplerythrinus unitaeniatus - which only grows to 6".

So, IMO, I would contact the state DNR and get confirmation of the meaning of the law before taking it upon myself to bring in a potentially illegal species. Make sure they aren't using 'Trahira' in lieu of the Family Erythrinidae.

So I need to call the FWC?

yes, you can contact them and get clarification. but on the FWC website, it does clearly state that Erythrinus is also illegal.

I'm not sure if your question is rhetorical or not. The restricted list clearly shows:

To protect and conserve Florida's natural aquatic resources and help ensure public safety, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) prohibits (see Prohibited fishes) or restricts (see list above) certain non-native fishes and aquatic fauna. Moreover, no person shall allow or permit any freshwater aquatic organism not native to the state to remain in the waters of any pond which is not maintained or operated for the production of such non-native species.

The FWC uses well-defined criteria to determine where a species should appear on the list. The most current list is available by checking the statutes (See 68A-23.008).

So, 'Yes'. Contact the FWC.

Have you been in a hole for the last 10 years? Silver Aro's are one of the most popular fish to keep in Florida, So would you think it was illegal if so many people have them?

So if the word "Trahira" is not used in conjunction with Hoplias sp, Does that mean black wolves and others are legal.
