In my opinion Red Tailed Catfish are the best looking catfish on earth, and I'd love to own one, I just don't know if it would work for me.

I have a 200 gallon tank (7-2-2) and a pond being built that will be about 15'x15'x5'.
If I got a rtc, it would live in the 200 until it was about 18" or so, then upgraded to the pond.

In the 200 gallon there is a silver arowana, shovelnose catfish, two Florida gar, clown knife, and pleco. All the fish will be upgraded to the pond when they outgrow the 200.

Is this ok for a rtc?

If so then what kind of aggression am I looking at? What kind of growth rate do they have? How active are they and what are their actions like? And what other personal experiences and information can you share with me?

You want to not get a red tail to small so he won't be eatin but not to big that he outgrows the other fish and eats them. Kind of tricky. Why not get the fish in the other pond first have am empty tank to grow him out in then move him into the pond?

^ i agree. If the project is not to far from done. They grow quite quickly. 1-2" a month in the first year depending on feeding and quality of water and space. They tend to eat anything they think they can fit in their mouth. He will probably like to hide most of the day unless he is hungry.

i agree with camshaft that is. it isn't a bad idea to grow the other fishes out first then an rtc, but then again it isn't bad to grow them up together either.

Rtc can grow well past 2' in their first year....i wouldnt suggest it...heck even the fish you have now wont hold until this time next year in a 200 gallon.
