im trying learn more about Semaprochilodus taeniurus AKA flag tails. i want a fish to fill up the top level of my tank. i love the look of the flag tail but im not sure if their right for me! Ive done my share of research, now its time to hear from the wise and experienced ones! :)

ill give some background info, so u guys can make an educated decision.

tank size: 120 gallon 48 X 24 X 24''
Filtration: FX 5 and Eheim 2028 pro 2. i also have a 1200 GPH power head for extra current and circulation.

tank inhabitants: three 8'' bichirs and one 7'' female motoro stingray ( shes in there until she grows out ;) )

i was thinking of just getting one?
so is it a go for a flag tail?

i also made this thread to learn a bit more about flag tails. i would like to hear some personal experiences revolving around them.

thanks

I say go for it. It will eventually outgrow that tank, but they are pretty slow growers, so it will probably take a couple years if you get a smaller one. I got mine at about 2.5" 11 months ago and it's around 7" now. It took a while to get mine to eat anything but algae (on surfaces, wafer form, and flake form), so if weaned onto higher protein foods sooner, they could possibly grow faster.

oh, i didn't think it would out grow a 120 wide.. since it only grows to be about 12''..

that sucks...if what u say is 100% correct maybe i should just pass on the flag tail...:(

I've heard of (not personally seen) flagtails in the 20-24" range, but they were around 10-15 years old. I remember one discussed in a large build thread a few weeks ago

Looking at articles and postings on this site and others, I see articles listing the max size at 9" (which I know is incorrect-I've seen bigger in person) to people mentioning having 18 inchers. I'm certain I saw mention of a 23 incher in a thread I read withing the last month. Even if that's an over estimate, I'd still expect them to get around 18" given plenty of room (and time)

They are REALLY cool fish though-great color, good algae eaters, very active. I'm VERY glad I got mine the only time I ever saw them for sale. I actually got two and I'm really mad I lost the other one (not to fighting though-they were in separate tanks-power outage dropped the O2 in the smaller tank before I could do anything)
