are severums 'less smart' by comparison?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have had a sev now for about eight months and it is not as owner responsive as my hoga or pearsei but comes up front during feeding time. I will walk into the room and find it staring at the back of the tank for no reason..... none of the other fish do that. But it does get along with everyone and never starts anything so at this time its a keeper, even if it is not so 'smart'.
Ya, I would consider that a stupid fish.
is it the only Sev in there?

I had a red severum always made me smile with all the stupid stuff he would do.and always followed me as I went by the tank.It was cool . If I had a 180 I would do severum geos and potamotarygon ray s. That's just me but good luck with ur choices
yeah, I'm still debating the mix. compromise with current stock flexibility can't really be ignored.

I'd say they are pretty smart for cichlids .... almost as smart as most vieja-type species, but usually not quite as confident. In the right tank with the right tankmates they will be very interactive with people and be up to all sorts of odd swimming tricks and funny behaviours.
HMmmm. that's worth knowing. THANKS.

More fish to fish interaction, less owner recognition...So if you want owner recognition, get a single Jardini or a Umbie as a wet pet.

Although I don't necessarily want a fish whose behavior would warrant a call to the police if it were a person.

i wouldnt do sevs if your looking for a owner responsive fish, i would get something like an oscar or red devil, even if your into africans, get either OB peacocks or elec blue ahli, they are owner responsive.

huhhhhhhhhhh. you mean it's not normal to call the police during family gatherings?

I kinda want a group of fish who are gorgeous enough to be cichlid centerfolds, and if they were people it would be like watching a MENSA meeting.

It'd be a Plus if my Oscar and some of the Geos could mix in too. especially my 2 heckelii, they've done mild ricochets in the 75 reecently.
My O was too mean to the geos when he was 3 inches to stay in their 75G. I wonder if he'd be nicer in 180?

sigh.
or I could put O in 75, move all geos to 180 & add more psychedelic species.
Rapps has some unusual Sevs in, sound interesting.

I ended up with my 2 mbuna by mistake. I got a little blue one to be lone King of a 20 G, but he looked so tiny & alone that my husband brought home "the brightest most beautiful, active yellow one in the store".
