It is illegal to own or fish here in Canada. Very heavy fine and jail term.

Unless there is a severe depletion of fish in your area of BC then I can't see how you can't fish...
Everywhere you need permits yet, and some places (depending on what your fishing for) you need stamps as well, but I have yet to see an all out ban on fishing for no reason....or were you being sarcastic?

is that a no? lol im pretty sure u r allowed to keep one if you have a permit in alberta, i dont see why it would be illegal to own one if there are people that breed them for sale

There is serious paperwork to bring in live ones (or cavier) if I recall correctly.

Not so. i had a Sturgeon. it was imported from California. The sturgeon are illegal to catch(Keep)...no idea about actually keeping them...are the lake and river sturgeons. There are available from time to time is pet shops. I have seen them at petland and World of pets here is saskatoon. again these are from California and they are not cold water fish!!!

The problem is that sturgeon require CITES permits for shipping over national borders. Many you see for sale just come in with regular fish shipments, without paperwork.
