Are there any dwarf cichlids that can thrive in a 20 gallon high aquarium?

This question will come, what is your source water pH?
If you have hard alkaline water, you could start a small colony of Tanganyika shell dwellers like neolamprologus multifasciatus or similis or a single pair of caudopunctatus 🤗

Agree with danotaylor danotaylor

This will highly depend on your tap water source. If soft, acidic and low ph, you could do either ram or apistogramma with a small school of cardinal tetra or something small to that nature.
