Maybe you should go back and read it again? The only person that said "sting" here was you. Bio major but no reading comprehension skills. :screwy:

yea i fixed it before u even posted, but btw read my posts... you will see that i was talking about sting rays the whole time:screwy: and like i stated there are no sting rays without stingers... electric rays, manta rays... aren't sting rays...

sorry for confusion but that is what i was talking about from the beginning so got tied up in my own answers thinking sting rays only... regardless my comments where on sting rays and skates only...

good luck with your pond.... post pics with what ever you do!!

I read your posts. You were saying "sting". He wasn't. I could post a reply talking about bananas but that's not what the OP was talking about and it's not what Zoodiver was talking about.

Not that I know of, you could trim the barb every time it grows back if you should choose to get one. It can't feel it so just tie the barb to the tail and cut it off at the base with pliers.

i know i said that i realized this.... and even when i didn't realize this, i was never meaning to be disrespectful i was trying to find out information... then you came in with your who to listen to comment.... you need to chill guy..... like i said i was talking about sting rays only and skates only the whole time... and any educational information which you have non of.... i would love to hear... i love you people who come on to threads and contribute nothing to the post.. just try to fight with people.....

i never talked down the zoo person just asked for information...

i told him of a small skate op could buy and contributed to his question.... which is what this site is about.. how bout you do more contributing and less bickering?

Butterfly rays are a ray without a barb. Though you really need some saltwater time under your belt prior to keeping them. They are a step beyond the common rays.
There are several skates that do well in captive settings as well.

And for what it's worth, they are finding mantas with barbs now. Kind of a new thing that is just being looked into.

Like, posting a bunch of drivel unrelated to the original post? I had no plans to post on this thread because I don't have the appropriate knowledge. Whereas there are *other* posts where I'll reply because I *do* have a clue (you've just posted on one such thread).

What bugged me about your posts is you came on, couldn't comprehend the original question, and posted a bunch of tripe about RTCs. You *could've* done what I'd planned to do - not reply - but you wanted to come on and be the big man. Well done you, I'm certainly impressed.

Gymnura marmorata? that butterfly ray? because it has a stinger.... also they get 5 feet... i think if your going to get it, just do sting rays bro...

as for you pete... the man is worried bout his grand daughters/ dogs... if its enough to not buy rays, stingrays, what ever.... then some monster catfish would be really cool... and also would be very easy because of how hardy they are.... i was explaining that anything labeled sting ray would have a stinger and also that skates have their own weapons...

also i just talked to the dr. who teaches a sharks class and marine classes (senior level) and he said manta rays do not have stingers. they are filter feeders with no teeth(well little pegs) and no stinger... also i just googled it after talking to him and could find nothing... if you have a true source, i would love a link or book title... if a biology journal please send journal name because i can look up every journal in the world under my university database... it's worth a whole lot if you have a real source(most internet sites are garbage)...THANKS!!

Interesting how such a simple question can turn into such a heated argument. Just makes for more useless reading for the rest of us. :irked:

As for the question that was asked. I would just go with fresh water rays. Yes, they can sting but are very unlikely to do so. My thoughts are that if your grand kids are old enough to try to get in the pond and mess with the rays, they are old enough to learn not to. If they are to young to understand than they are not old enough to be anywhere near that pond without supervision.

As for the dogs. If you make the pond deep enough for the rays to get away, you should not have a problem with a dog/ray conflict. The rays are not going to attach your dogs and if the rays have a safe place to get away, they should not have a problem with the dogs getting them, unless your dogs go diving. I know dogs that will dive under water so I guess it could be a concern. But the pond could be designed around this if it was a problem.

I would just do your research and learn all you can and teach your grand kids what you have learned. That is part of the fun.:D

Gentlemen, please relax.

Doesn't it get very cold in NY? How would you keep the pond warm enough in winter?

If your granddaughters are getting close enough to get stung then they would already be in trouble as if they are not old enough to be left alone with a Ray then they are not old enough to be left alone near any pond...period.

You would have to fall in the pond and on to a Ray to get stung. They are not aggressive with their stings, it is then last form of defence.
