Are there turtle/tortoise restrictions in California?

Does anyone know if there are any particular species of turtles/tortoises that are restricted from being kept as pets in California? I always see a lot of different kinds in the LFS and am curious. I know they have to be over 4", but have no idea otherwise. Please educate me. Thank you!

Yeah, not sure on the complete list, but I know desert tortoise are illegal to own unless given to you by a rescue shelter.

I'm sure there are many turtle restrictions in good old Cali. I'd check with your Fish & Game Department but there are a few regulars on here from your state that might be able to answer your question. There is also a sticky in this Exotic/Reptiles section that has state by state rules and regulations.

I wouldn't advertise that on a public forum if I were you.


But yeah, snappers and some endangered species are all o know of as illegal.
