its definitely a tilapia. It is a cichlid and not a sunny for sure because sunnies have dorsal spines. (most north american fish have dorsal spines)

Cichlids have dorsal spines but they're not grouped on their own as they are in sunfish.

Sorry, but I do not know how anyone here is trying to ID a fish with those photos? I agree that they do not look like any sunfish I have seen, but I would not rule it out completely. Nobody anywhere can ID those fish with any certainty until they can see them!

I would.
You can do that if you know what you're looking at. ;)

Really? so you can tell .with 99% certainty what genus and species these are, from the pics? Wow, you must really be into Tilapia. I stand corrected

Indeed you do.
I gave all info needed in my first post. With 100% certainty they are Oreochromis. I never guaranteed species but gave several possibilities. I personally think they might be O. niloticus due to the red eye.
Yes I have kept a few "tilapia" (though Oreochromis are not scientifically considered tilapia) and have been "quite into them". ;)

while everyone agrees on a name, i saw one of those in a creek by my house .it was about 7-8 inches long and had fry.the babies were black with red eyes.the adult was yellow and silver horizontal stripes.i didnt bring a pole so i couldent catch it.
