Are these good tank mates?

"gold nuggets" don't get very big, are slow growing and sensitive.

you could just do one pictus, but before you think the cichla are capable of eating it, take it out. catfish are not good for them to swallow. same thing w/ the clown...i would get at least 3 of those...except you don't want to lose them at all really :D

Yeah, any catfish/bottom feeders I get will be big enough to stay off the cichla's menu.

pwmin, i researched gold nuggets after seeing it at the lfs and saw they were slow growing and not a large max size to begin with. That was another reason I don't want to spend $30 on 'em, then add on being sensitive...pass ;)

Ok so sounds like I can do 1 pictus fine, but I saw mixed reviews on the clown loach. Whats another cat that will fit nicely in this community? So far 6 cichla, 6 silver dollars, 1 pictus, 1 pleco, 1 other bottom feeder.

well i thought 14" is a pretty good size for a pleco for a 125. they are a hardy fish. they are just really quick. jump on the floor and i'll bet your pbass jump more then these guys would. and out of all my fish i would say it's one of the nicest in my collection. the gold nugget eats all night on zuchini and algea discs. him and the royal gets all the left over bloodworms. after i got these guys i dont see me ever getting another common.

CL and pictus will be outgrown and do better in groups.
SDs are great...they tend to encourage little cichla to swim about.
plus they make good dithers.
also, cichla do learn that something is food by watching others eat it.
oh,and the 125g will not last more than 2 years depending on dimensions.

I know the cichla will outgrow the tank in 1-2 years. Doesn't mean I can't enjoy them until then :)

Ok so if pictus and clown loaches only do well in groups (and I don't want groups), and have the possibility of being outgrown at a rate that puts them on the cichla menu....what bottom feeders do you guys suggest? Ones that do well by themselves..

depends on what you like....and if the food actually gets to the bottom.
are you looking for a fish that only picks up after others,or a fish that is a bottom feeder and that you will feed and not just let it pick up after the cichla?

One of each really...

and I'm going to throw a pleco into the mix, to take care of any algae issues/etc.
