Hello Everyone!

I have looked at this forum for quite sometime but have never made a post till now.

I have a fairly heavily planted 75 gallon tank that has been up and running for 3 years. I recently sold my discus because I wanted to get back into angelfish. I put in a special order for wild caught Rio Nanay angelfish (so I didn't see them before purchasing) and this is what the stores vender sent.

Perhaps it is because they are juvies still, but to me when I even look at pictures of other Rio Nanay juvies mine look....well like domestic silvers, even the body shape is different from what I was expecting. I was under the impression they'd have a more defined snout and colouring if that makes sense. I wasn't expecting altums as I know I was ordering scalares....but I have doubts about what I actually did receive.

So I thought I would ask the clever people here their opinion was and go from there.

So opinions please! Are these real Rio Nanay Angels (and maybe my expectations are too high) or domestic silvers?

These look like domestic silvers to me. Rio Nanay angels have a notched nose and usually brown/red mottling on the back and flanks. They also have extremely long pelvic fins that curve/hook backward toward the anal fin. They would look like this:

Agree. These are domestic silvers.

The video Ryan posted is spot on.

Thanks for the reply's and confirming what I already thought/knew. The store I ordered them through is reputable but I guess there vender perhaps not so much. Those were some pricey silvers.....le sigh. I felt obligated to take them as they were a "special order".

The good news is you have solid healthy angels.

Exactly!!!! They are actually doing amazing and I have 3 pairs that have all spawned once each so far! I think I lucked out with getting 3 pairs out of 6 angels.....no one is odd fish out. It's nice everyone has a buddy to take cover with when another pair gets going;)

Idk man, I understand feeling obligated to a special order, but wrong fish, that's shady. Did you contact them and let them know?

To be honest I actually said something as soon as I saw them to the fishroom manager while they were still in their shipping bag. I can't pretend that I've ever seen a wild scalare in person but I've seen enough pictures/videos to have a reasonable expectation as to what I was going to receive. He insisted they were indeed wild and even pulled out the order sheet as to what the vendor had available that week for the store to order from along with the stores check list from the weeks shippment to confirm they were indeed marked as WC Rio Nanay angels. That's why I just took them, he seemed to believe they were indeed the real deal even though I had suspicions right off the hop and I felt bad for them.

Don't get me wrong, these are some nice silvers.......but yeah, not what I was hoping and paid for.

I'd still like to get my hands on some wilds though but my options here are pretty much limited to that one store.

See, quite pretty for silvers. Their mine now I guess and I learned a bit of a lesson I suppose.
