are they trying to breed?

Give them time apart then introduce them again later. How big are they? How long have you had them? Did you just get the female? Has male always been by himself?
 
They are about 6 inches, I have had the male for 17 days and the female for about 5 months no it was female's tank
 
So they're not use to being around each other. Keep introducing them slowly and hopefully they bond.
 
Thanks a lot mate..hope they pair. Now I m worrying about the fins..Will they grow again?
 
Dont worry they grow back in time. Make sure water temp is around 84 and water quality is good. Use cold water when doing water change. Good luck!
 
Can you post pictures of the pair? It will take at least 2 weeks divided in the same tank for them to get use to each other. If the male shakes its head and clearing the area at the divider with the female on the other side then wants to mate. Also at the same time if the female likes him, she will develop eggs and once her tube is out about 1/4 inch out you can take out the divider. Also a 6" flower pot plate needs to be on her side as well. There will be fish dancing and some lip locking to see if the male can prove his dominance over her. If missing scales and fins then one is not ready. If they get along then mating will happen in a day or two. Good Luck.
