I've read different perspectives on this fish. Some say they are among the mellowist of the paratheraps/vieja species. Others say they are persistently aggressive in a community tank. I wonder if it has to do with fish hierarchy. Perhaps, if they are alpha fish in the tank then they go postal. If they are bottom rung then they stay chilled.

I'm thinking of getting one. But now I'm a bit reluctant. So what has been your experience with regani?

I have 2 in a community tank. They are both pretty chilled out. They end up taking more abuse than they give, by A LOT... and sadly it kind of shows. Their tails are always tattered :(

I started with 11 juvies in a 150 gal tank, and found them to be very demur and hid a lot until they hit the 5" mark, at that point, 11 individuals became 2. I gave mine to a friend after it killed its mate, he put it in a 200+ gal tank, and it killed 2 larger red devils, a much larger carpintus and a trimac.
My guess is, if you have a tank 300 gals or larger, the problems are lessened.

We had one in the 125 and from experience with that specimen, would say that they are moderately aggressive compared to other vieja-like cichlid. I too have seen literature where reputable authors cite them as mellow as far ad CA cichlids go...but on here,.I've always seen people say the opposite

Barely aggressive at all. They can be territorial, but not aggressive. I have kept three in different sized community tanks. My hartwegis, conkels, argentea, bifs, syns, and mells were more dominant. Every fish is different though.

Thank you all for sharing your experiences. I know you guys practice good husbandry of your fish. It's interesting to see how some are just evil and others are sheepish.

What are mells?

Probably meant Melanurus, a related fish.
