If your municipal water contains 0.5 ppm of ammonia this a separate issue from necessary routine water changes. This residual ammonia will be managed as a separate consideration from the water changes. The water changes are being performed to reduce accumulated nitrates, phosphates and organic contaminants and to rejuvinate the KH and stabilize the tank pH. To manage the ammonia, treat your municipal water with either Amquel+ or Seachem Prime. Either of these products will detoxify the ammonia until it is processed by your biofilter. Once you have treated your municipal water, forget about the ammonia.
