Used to be a cat person all the way, but lost all my tolerance to them (allergies-wise) when I moved out...
People who have this weird cat-phobia or hate them usually never have owned a cat, or were scratched once when they were little/saw Lady & the Tramp and were scarred for life. Serious, I've had many people come over to my house when I live with my family, and they couldn't believe how affectionate and cool my cats were... they thought they were evil until then.
Dogs are fun because you can take them into the bush with you, but they require more attention than cats, which is why I don't have one yet.
My dad is a vet so I grew up with lots of animals... 7 cats and 3 dogs (plus fish, turtles, guinea pigs, etc.) at one point, so I've seen my share of both. You can't compare 'dog vs. cat', it is like saying "are you a bicycle person or a hat person"...
