I would be a member, BUT, 1) costly for a student type... 2) the meets are always so far away, 3) gotta pay for a fish list????? 4) They don't offer perks to entice new members (see #1, 2, and 3)
It is $25 yearly, last time I paid. The ACA convention is held yearly, and rotates around the USA. This year it was in Sacramento, as one of the MFK banners proudly notes. Next year it will be in Atlanta. It isn't for everyone, but I don't understand the snide mockery posted in this thread earlier either.
The Buntbarsche Bulletin alone is worth the $25. 6 issues a year of high-quality, insightful articles just about cichlid and cichlid-keeping. In the last year, there have been articles about
Hoplarchus psittacus (Brian Scott),
Nandopsis vombergae (Prosanta Chakrabarty) - a real "rare" fish if ever there was one,
Amphilophus margaritifer (Eric Hanneman), raising fry (Ted Judy),
Konia eisentrauti (Tom Williams), and a series of articles about collecting fish in Venezuela - fish that were not restricted to just
Cichla and
Crenicichla, but also many MONSTER characins. Google these species and see what kind of quality references you get.
If you are into cichlids, and truly enjoy seeing their natural beauty, fierce parental protective behavior, engaging demeanor, or whatever else attracts you to them, I can think of few better ways to spend $25. If you make it to a convention, you can recoup several times over that expenditure in rare fish cheaply, and tap into the collective knowledge of some of the best breeders in the states.
