Good call on this thread; this situation is probably something that people from this site most likely run into more often than not.
I've had to check myself a time or two from talking someone's ear off about fish keeping. It can be difficult sometimes because essentially I study fish and fish keeping, and have been for the last few years. I think most of us do, all this reading about fish online as well as fish keeping ourselves has educated us. Sometimes this causes an "information dump", I guess because there's no test to take.
It's also very easy to make the mistake of choosing the wrong person to share a fish story or idea with.
Normally when a guy around my age (30) is talking about fish, its usually something along the lines of "that big fish they saw, that ate some goldfish/minnows" and when that 20 second story is over, they are done.
Every once in a while I run into someone who has something like a 10 gallon tank up and running but doesn't understand tank husbandry. These people somehow find a way to keep fish alive or are continuing to replace their fish. The idea of once a week water changes, ph, hardness, etc. is out of the question. They enjoy there tank but not the same way most of us enjoy ours.
Sometimes though you can't help but trap someone. I did just recently when discussing aquaponics. He seemed interested but my wife called me out for my "lecture" when we left the party. She enjoys our tanks but isn't into it like myself.
The list goes on and on, sometimes its wierd to think about how few of what I would consider "true" hobbyist/fish keepers there actually are.
My friends all know that I'm that "fish guy" and that I will talk your ear off about fish. I've gotten a few of my friends into the hobby mostly by giving away my older tanks after an upgrade in hopes of spreading the addiction of fish keeping. I guess I'm like a drug dealer in those respects.
I'll end it at that, before I do like normal and ramble on too long.
