Are you like me when you meet someone who keeps fish?

They probably just think you're crazy because you spend the whole time talking about goldfish! haha.

JK though, I do the same thing. Was at a bar recently on a date and there was a 90g african tank in the back of it. I started talking about said tank with the girl and the owner of the bar overheard and before you know it, the date was sitting there, bored.

I can't remember if I posted this or not, but when I meet someone who keeps fish, like at a party or whatever, i will literally talk their ear off about fish. Then, as the conversation goes along, I think to myself, this guy (or gal.. well, the gal part has never happened) must think i'm crazy, becuase I am carrying on this fish conversation for so long. My wife usually elbows me in the ribs and says something like "geeze, is fish all you can talk about?" Then i realize that i've been chatting for ever with this dude about fish, and maybe he wants me to shut up. Its just that I don't have friends who keep fish, so when the real life opportunity comes up to talk fish, I bust and go nuts. Non-fish people's eyes typically glaze like a three week old platy under a tank stand, after 1 or 2 minutes of fish talk, so when I get the chance with a fellow fish keeper, I must look and sound like a crazy person.

Happen to you?

Signed, lonely fish keeper.
Me.

Every thing u just said! Ditto my friend!

I'm exactly the same....I luckily have a couple fish friends around me and it does seem like the time flies when we get together to talk "fish". I have accepted my "nerdiness" as my wife calls it and instead try to educate those less interested in my hobby on their misconceptions about fishkeeping. I am lucky to have four junior fishkeepers in my house that love anything and everything about my tanks (They claim a few of them but somehow I am the only one doing water changes!!!)

The same in my house but with my four boys I don't want their help because that water change would turn into a water fight.

Good call on this thread; this situation is probably something that people from this site most likely run into more often than not.

I've had to check myself a time or two from talking someone's ear off about fish keeping. It can be difficult sometimes because essentially I study fish and fish keeping, and have been for the last few years. I think most of us do, all this reading about fish online as well as fish keeping ourselves has educated us. Sometimes this causes an "information dump", I guess because there's no test to take.

It's also very easy to make the mistake of choosing the wrong person to share a fish story or idea with.

Normally when a guy around my age (30) is talking about fish, its usually something along the lines of "that big fish they saw, that ate some goldfish/minnows" and when that 20 second story is over, they are done.

Every once in a while I run into someone who has something like a 10 gallon tank up and running but doesn't understand tank husbandry. These people somehow find a way to keep fish alive or are continuing to replace their fish. The idea of once a week water changes, ph, hardness, etc. is out of the question. They enjoy there tank but not the same way most of us enjoy ours.

Sometimes though you can't help but trap someone. I did just recently when discussing aquaponics. He seemed interested but my wife called me out for my "lecture" when we left the party. She enjoys our tanks but isn't into it like myself.

The list goes on and on, sometimes its wierd to think about how few of what I would consider "true" hobbyist/fish keepers there actually are.

My friends all know that I'm that "fish guy" and that I will talk your ear off about fish. I've gotten a few of my friends into the hobby mostly by giving away my older tanks after an upgrade in hopes of spreading the addiction of fish keeping. I guess I'm like a drug dealer in those respects.

I'll end it at that, before I do like normal and ramble on too long. :)

I've meet and know a few people who like and keep fish but none are really enthusiastic about it as I am. Most the time I use mfk to vent and talk about fish cause even though people listen but most just look at me clueless.
