I woke up the other morning to a loud beeping. I got up to see what the noise was, and found that it was my carbon monoxide detector going off:eek:

I called the fire department who came in with their meter, and they told me I did have carbon monoxide levels in my house. They were low at the time, but they told me the levels would have kept getting higher. They said I am lucky I had a detector. I put it in like 5 months ago. It was like $40 and plugs right into an outlet.

It turns out it was coming from my furnace that is only 5 yrs old.

On a lighter note, one of the firemen told me I should turn off my tank filters because he was afraid the surface agitation would introduce carbon monoxide into the tank and kill my fish.. So my fish were safe..lol.

If you don't have a carbon monoxide detector, simply go buy one for $40 at Home Depot and plug it in!

Good advise Tyler, glad to see you had the detector.

i live in rented accomodation and its law here for landlords to supply one where gas is used in a house. one i had in my married quarter went off and wouldnt stop, i was terrified my wife and dog were gonna get ill or worse. really scares you. i was lucky though as it was just an old one and it needed replacing.

we dont have gas in the flat where i live now so its not something i have to worry about anymore.

but you were lucky, good job you made that purchase. im glad you and your family are ok.

I think federally it is a law for new houses to have the detectors now. But I'll bet the majority of people with older houses have not put them in.

where in the house did you keep the alarm? could i get away with having one for the home? i live in a 1100 sq foot home

thanks for posting this.. something we need to be aware of..

I have it in the dining room which is on the main level in my 2 story house. The FD said I should have one on the second level as well. They said that the carbon monoxide rises and tends to gather in pockets in corners on top floor of the house.

1 should be fine for your home, but if you have a 2 story, two would be better.
