The past week hes been acting strange kind of hiding a lil bit and this fish never hid at all. The past two days i noticed that he spends allot of time behind the pleco cave in the right corner. He dug out all the sand and swims like crazy against the glass. Not sure if hes attacking it or not. Seemed to be eating ok until today. Yesterday i fed him some frozen cichlid cubes hes always iffy with nls but devours omega one. He really didnt eat much tonight. I offered the oo pellets and he usually goes nuts...but ate little. He usually gets picky after i give him a treat but always goes for the oo. Im concerned because he always swims up to the tank when i approach it but the past few days kind of hides when i go near the tank. Sorry for rambling any thoughts ?

You guys know i love this s.o.b if he doesnt eat oo tomorrow then something has to be wrong.

i thin the 30 , 50, and 120 sec mark shows what im talking about. Im watching now and hes going nuts behind that cave.

Doesn't look like anything to worry about. Hes just doing cichlid stuff, moving sand and claiming territory. at the 30 sec mark I see him chase a tiger barb - again normal - thats why the barbs are dithers. Looks good and healthy

Agree with the above. This because in nature, argentea spend much of their early lives in a rheophillic situation, hiding under rocks and in caves, which they defend against other cichlids.
The tank is very bright, without much cover for comfort, and even behind the rock, seems very exposed. A few dark areas might help to make it feel less manic.
I have some Theraps lentiginosus that spend most of their time in the mouths of caves, only venturing when food is presented.

Eeeww glad no one thinks its anything .... why the new found shiness of me though never hid from me

Will add a med sized clay pot

If he quits eating he's sick. Has he quit eating? See any stringy white poops? Watch and see for the next day or two.

Didnt eat again. Stomach looks like there is food in it though not sunken in. Gonna try a peice of krill if nothing then will try blood worms. I have been messing with the tank this week afding dw then removing it to soak out the tannins then adding it back. Also added plants (from petsmart in the tubes)

Water params:
Ph 6.4 to 6.6
Nh3 0
No2 0
No3 between 5 and 10.

He ate like a beast the day before yesterday. Gorged himself on these frozen cichlid cubes ( mix of shrimps) i hardly ever feed him this...come to think of it this may have been the first time.

There are times when some fish will just go through a period of not eating, and usually shows not indication of why this is happening. All you can really do is keep water quality up to par and hope things turn out for the best. Last year, I had a couple of fish that would just, one day, show no interest at feeding time for like 2 months, then just one day, decided to eat again. The whole time, they never showed any sort of symptoms besides lack of appetite.

He just ate two large pieces of krill !! Woo hoo and pooped redish brown (normal). He usually is picky after a "treat" meal but never with oo kelp pellets, the day before yesterday he went to town on some frozen cichlid grow cubes which arent part of his normal diet. Usually after a treat he wont take nls. I guess im gonna have to starve him for a couple of days. I dont mind him not taking nls but we arent gonna start the no pellet thing.

The new shyness has me concerned still...its not like him at all

Should i look to raise the ph ? Isnt it low for CA ?

It could be that he's so gorged up fro the previous feeding that, he hasn't quite digested the previous meal and just wasn't hungry. Also, its been my observation that sometimes when a fish way over eats, it has a tendency to go into hiding and rest to digest the food. An example is my giant gourami will go hide in the plants when I give him a too big a piece of fruit. He's the king of the tank and never ever hides ordinarily.

In regards to pH, yes it is a bit low, but messing with pH is something I just don't do or advise, but many fish keepers do it and it works for them. Is your pH the same, out of the tap?
