Argentea acting strange (with vid)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
They do come from highly alkaline, low nitrate waters, but because argentea is a riverine species, it has the ability to adapt to fluctuating water parameters, when rains come, pH shifts, dry season also different.
That said, it is most important to maintain high water quality for these fish, so if trying to mess with pH would make water changes harder(less frequent), then using your normal tap water as is, is the best medicine.

I run purigen and added a bunch of live plants so quality can only get better. Nitrate never goes above 10ppm. I could add some crushed coral in a media bag into one of the filters. But i guess that could cause a fluctuation immediately after a wc. This is easily my favirote fish dont wanna do anything to shorten his lifespan

What ya think ? Leave it be or add the cc

Crushed coral is not a bad way to go, as far as a buffering application.
It acts slowly, only dissolves as needed, such as when, or if the tank drops below equilibrium.
And can sometimes "temporarily" catch (buffer) an unnoticed mistake (unseen dead fish, overfeed, etc).
I have used it in the fine, aragonite sand form, in fluidized bed reactors.

It could be that he's so gorged up fro the previous feeding that, he hasn't quite digested the previous meal and just wasn't hungry. Also, its been my observation that sometimes when a fish way over eats, it has a tendency to go into hiding and rest to digest the food. An example is my giant gourami will go hide in the plants when I give him a too big a piece of fruit. He's the king of the tank and never ever hides ordinarily.

In regards to pH, yes it is a bit low, but messing with pH is something I just don't do or advise, but many fish keepers do it and it works for them. Is your pH the same, out of the tap?

X....didnt see your reply i never thought of thenover eating/hiding bit...nice observation.

Duanes

I would hve to get something that i could place in either my 2217 or ac110.

Ph out of the tap is maybe 6.8 to 7.2
Im terrible at reading these things

I'm not a plant guy, but I believe CO2 results in a pH drop, and that plants produces CO2 when light is not present. However, I do notice in your vid that the tank only has a few small plants, but I figure I'd just throw this out there.

I have an anubis nana and fava fern

Picked up some crushed coral im thinking afd a little at first gonna put it in my ac110.
How.long does it take to affect the ph

I think just live with the water you have. I mean, you put coral in the water, it raises pH....then what happens to pH when you change 75% of tbe water out at the end of tbe week?

Take it slow, keep it simple, be patient. Especially with Argentea--they take a lot of time.

Oh! Forgot to add....brown poop good. White poop bad. After a complex tank outbreak, I've now taken to watching and critiquing fish turds...I think that's sad. :).

Im a poop watcher too lol

Something is stressing the fish out though.
