Argentea - tell me about them...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yes, they have some nice stuff, but those big tanks have ich, TRUST me. Quarantine and treat.
With all the big bruisers in there your bound to have some issues. Another store with a large tank that also has a mix of big cichlids constantly seems to have issue with fin rot. They just cant give the same type of care we can at home.

The thing that bothers me is that you can CLEARLY see the ich if you know anything about fish disease. Yet, they are still selling the fish with no sign on the tank warning of the issue. You could at least treat the tank and not sell them until it clears up... it's not like ich is that hard to cure. A good fish store should not knowingly sell sick fish, and if they can't see those fish have ich then they have no business working with them in the first place... just my 2 cents.

Kevin WILL NOT sell a sick fish. I have found that some of his help doesnt know any better, but not Kevin. And if you have been in there and noticed something, if you are a genuine fish hobbyist, you should have mentioned something. If I notice anything in any store that I go to, I tell someone. They are so busy they may not notice the first signs of something. So help them out.

As for the Argentea at Aquarist World, it is about 9" or so. I can almost guarantee it was less than $80.

Thanks for the follow up Madness! I will have to check that guy out. It will be interesting to see what my Midas thinks of a fish in his size bracket.

A one month follow up - this ones not dead, yet.

I went ahead and got the Argentea that was 4". Turns out to be a wild caught Rio Tulija variety. At the store it stayed toward the back of the tank and did not really come forward much, but you could tell it was a looker. Got him home and put him into the 120g with my 10" Midas and a 3.5" Salvini and there were no issues. He established his dominance over the Salvini right away but did not bully or chase. He is very bold and fearless and is all over the tank and comes up front as soon as he spots me. This he started doing on the second day in the tank. He started to chase the silver dollars the very first day in the tank so I know he was feeling good being there. Cant wait to get all the fish into the new 210g, just waiting for the Manzanita branches to sink!

Still looking to add a Pearsei to the mix in the 210g. Will get pics up soon.

Dude, I'm sorry but I saw a number of sick fish for sale and ich in at least six tanks on the CA isle alone. I'm not saying Kevin isn't a nice guy or the store is bad, I think it's just worth noting those tanks had ich when this thread popped up. I generally don't make it a habit of telling a LFS owner how to treat his tanks... If you ask my opinion I will give it but giving unsolicted advice is usually not met kindly in the hobby IME.
