The reason is that they aren't wild caught and imported anymore. So you only have breeding pairs, and people only sell the offspring. And nobody wants to ever get rid of larger haits since they take so long and so much work to grow them. Plus, with the bloat issues these have, if someone takes that much work to raise them, they don't get rid of them later on down the road.

The last largish Hait I saw for sale was for something like $300 at 14" I think. Better off to just get some 3"ers, and grow out in that case, but it's going to take years. Large Haits seem to be super expensive.....

BTW, your Argentea was what made me start looking into them. Is that one of the Rio Tulijo's from Gage? It's really nice that you can get 7-8"ers for like $60, and they are gorgeous.

Yea I got it from Gage, my Argent is a bully, I wanted him in with my South and Central Americans but he rule the tank. I may have to get a smaller one and let him grow up with the others.

If you want to get rid of him because of his agressiveness, I'll gladly give him his own tank hahaha

Did you buy him at 13", or was this one of Gage's 7-8"ers when you got him?
 
Haitian all the way cant believe this is even close let alone the vieja winning
 
Just depends what you want.

The argentea are available in big sizes and are easier to care for. Haits are prone to bloat and would take a couple years to grow out. All depends what you want. I have kept argentea, and haits have been on my wish list for a while now. Would love to devote a big tank to a pair but just can't right now.
 
I just bought a baby (1") argenta. I love him dearly.
 
Imo Haits aren't any slower than growing out argentea. I got mine this summer at 3" he is now in the 8-9" range. Yes I've had problems with bloat in the past but I've pretty much got it down as far as keeping them and haven't had any bloat issues in a long time.
