My armatus has starting to act pretty weird with a slight head jerk occasionally. He also seems to have a slight film on the top of his body scales, or so it looks lke this anyway. I also noticed a fish scratching on the log a couple of days ago. Do Armatus suffer from ich, and what are good all around med for this other than a 25% water change which was jsut recently done 4 day ago,

Do Armatus have any issues getting ich?

test all params...

sounds like less then perfect water conditions.

small waterchanges every day and salt is the best way to go

they seem to very suceptable to ich during shipping. their skin is made up of very fine scales -like glitter. think this makes them prone to ich and fungal. as juvi they dont seem very resistant to the white body slime and are quickly overtaken by infection. i notice they are prone to eye abrasions as well. agree w post above check water prameters especially ammonia and ph, weekly or bi weekly water changes, prime and salt up. other fish I would suggest moving to quarantine tank but this method doesnt work well for payara, seems to stress them out more. if fish is being stressed by tank mates consider isolation in main tank using egg crate devider or mesh bait bag used for wade fishing . Another tip is either keep 1 or 3 or more. they dont seem to do well in pairs long term. get them off live food or QT feeders. I put other silver fish to keep them distracted ( silver dollars). they need a long tank so they dont bang back and forth resulting in head trauma. I have lost my share of payara finally got a stable shoal of 4 tats and 2 armatus. good luck

What size tank is he in? Whats he feeding on (could be from feeders)?

I do lots of water changes on my grow out tank and do big volume changes on my 300gl. I also add salt to the tank and very rarly got Ich with my 16" Armatus

I also had my tank temp around 88* or so... im sure that had a reason why I didnt get it often either

the fish scratching was another fish, correct?

they do appear to have a translucent film from time to time. I think that's what you are talking about. I dont pay much attention to it. What is of concern is if the eyes fog up, what appear to be imbalanced or impaired motor skills, irratic swiming in water areas it does not normally swim in, gasping.

head twitching - not too sure on this, never seen mine twitch just the head. is the body moving in conjunction? they do, do a sort of snake motion from time to time.

as others have suggested wouldn't recommend moving it, just keep water tip top, at most keep lights off and try not to stress it.

Started a 10% water change today, also added about 1/2 cup salt. Approx how much salt should I add for a 300gal? water params are fine, but noticed a few more nicked scales. So I sat in a corner to watch who may be stressing him out also, and it looks as if the clown knife which he was raised with seems to be pushing him around. Out he goes into a holding container. I'll see how he looks tommorrow.. Thanks for all the imput. Anyone need a 16in clown knife? I actually wanted a royal anyway..

He seems to be swimming right in front of the water tubes from the wetdry pump as if he is trying tio swim in the stream, never seen him do this before. Is that normally something they do? He generally sits in the middle of the tank in a hover motion

Is this the arm that you've had for the past year? What other fish do you have in the tank and which one is doing the scratching? It does not sound like Debo has ich from what you describe but the other fish may have some sort of parasite, could be from feeder fish.Make sure the arm is not fighting with another fish from which it could have gotten an injury from brushing against something during a chase. You are using Aquarium salt right?I dont remember how much to use but it has the dose ammount on the label.
