Armatus and Aimara update

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
2' tall

Im lucky ive only had my armies get spooked like once since ive had them. I was going in with a net to catch a ray and they got freaked out one hit the glass a few times.

I know its not likely to happen but as a big fish in a small tank, it only takes one little mistake and ding dong...

Maybe 30" tall is a little more forgiving? Given all the physical features you'd expect these guys to accelerate off the river bottom and head straight up with everything they've got.

So all a guyshould have to do is leave room for a big guy to breech...... Just need a big ol windowed ply tank in the basement with styro on the ceiling and netting as a "shower curtain".

I really hope it is this simple instead of the water........ :)

Actually, Armatus can get stress from tankmate, stop eating, and go "ding dong" as well. It happened to one of my 2-footer. I introduced the group of AULs into his tank. He stopped eating for roughly 2 months, and croaked. He wasn't even spooked, freak out, or jumpy during that period. He just look at his meal sunk to the bottom and didn't bother to go after it. Before I added the AULs, he struck the food as soon as it hit the water, sometimes, even faster than the barramundi

So are armatus best for a species only tank? From what i've gathered above they are.. But most people seem to keep them with a community of other species.

And basically no one manages to keep them long-term. If one imagines how they live in the wild, solitary, in open waters, it's not that hard to guess that they may be stressed by the presence of a bunch of tank mates...just my two cents.

Your rays are big enough to spook a 2' Armatus?

I've seen my Falks come right off swimming on the walls and if the Armatus are under them they just give a flick of the tail and move, doesn't really seem to bother them and my big girls are similar in disc size as Amatus length.

Trev are your tanks 2 or 2.5' tall?

Well my p14 are probably 14" diameter and the leo hen is probly 15-16",
but like trev said anything can happen. My armatus didnt get spooked much at a large size.

That Aimara is the epitome of MONSTER. The Armatus looks cute and innocent sitting next to that thing.

Both still look flawless. Is there ever any scrapping? Torn fins? Missing scales? I've never seen any in the pics I've seen?

Truly inspiring. Thank you for sharing. :)

Yes, every so often the Armatus will have some scales missing or the Aimara will have some. They never had any serious damage. They've been living together for around 3 years and seem to have a respect for each other. I don't think I can add anything else to this tank, just wish I had added a GATF when they were smaller.
