Armatus ID? Still Black (Hydrolycus wallacei)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm pretty sure I know what this is, and not only have we never seen one in the hobby before, there is damn near no info in the scientific literature for them, either....

Note the colors on the live one...

Think it's a wallacei? Look at page 2 the teeth seem to be too big. I think one of the specifics about this is smaller fangs but it has similar army fangs. A similar one was brought in on another forum in 2010 and was id'd as Armatus. Interesting find if wallacei for sure.

Other than the teeth size, it certainly looks a LOT like a wallacei. I'd be inclined to be it was one, but I've had so little luck in finding information about them that I'll admit that I don't know. IMO anyway, it looks more like a wallacei than an armatus.

Let me get you some updated pics of the teeth. The black one is now a tiny bit bigger than the light one and its teeth are half the size. I'll try getting pics tonight. Also were you looking at the pics on page 2? Those are not mine .hard to see the teeth in my video

You know I saw the video and then the pics. I thought it was urs furcifer lol. I'm getting old excuse me. Please do get some shots of its teeth. They are supposed to be smaller than that of Armatus. Smaller amount of lateral line scales and get only 14inches. So if any of these can be tested and found out, then will know.

I read that about the scales when I was doing some basic online searches and that's one thing I'm not sure of. When he was younger it did have that copper color to it but has faded. I'll try finding those older pics too,I think I threw them on a external hard drive

That makes perfect sense because the base color of wallacei is described as black in the papers I've read, woth variable scale coliration. It makes sense to me that the fish could fade out easily.

Do the scales look larger than those of the armatus?
