the goonch can survive in that hot of a temp?? i thought they can only live in the 60s and 70s?

well, they've been doing great, but yes they are a colder water fish... i'm going to have to make sure my water is always extremely well oxygenated as they get larger

dude I just realized we have two different types of dorado....check out the head shape...the one I have has a much more rounded head while the one you have its head slants downwards....I wonder if that is the different between Salminus Maxillosus and Salminus Brasilensis.....

by the way love the tank as always...one of my favorites. can't wait to see the new tank though...those guys will look like minnows in that beast of a tank.

Depends on where you get them from, too. According to Wes, ones from India grow really, really fast and tend to have problems in warmer water. Indian ones are supposed to be more aggressive, too. Wes also claims that the Thai fish tend to do just fine in tropical temps and tend to be very hardy. He goes on to say the Thai fish are less aggressive and slower growing.

There's been some lively debates by people who have very good authority on the subject over on Planet Catfish on this subject. Some of them seem to feel that Bagarius is in need of revision, with the Thai Bagarius yarrelli being reclassified as Bagarius bagarius. I'm no expert, so we shall see. I'm keeping this topic fresh in my mind for when my college work gets to that level.....

my Dorado i got from Jeff Rapps and was an S. maxillosus... maybe since mine is smaller it looks different? when i looked at your pics they looked the same to me though... And thats interesting stuff as far as the goonches and water temps... i always pay close attention to their breathing and behavior, since i know i'm keeping them in warmer than optimum temp... theres always a range of temps that fish can be kept at, since most locations have hot and cold seasons, the water temperatures can fluctuate quite a bit, but it wouldnt surprise me that thai goonches are better adapted to warmer water, since thailand is south of the khali river and closer to the equator ... also, my water is rediculously oxygenated, with the wet dry, and 2 large bubblers... in fact any time i take pics i have to shut the one bubbler off cause i have it attached to my magnum 8 water circulator so the whole tank is a huge bubble machine, and you really cant see well, but i know the goonches love it ... and thanks for the compliments guys

i was looking at your Dorado pics again arawanaryan... def the same fish i'd say, just different camera angles, and yours is def beefier... mines approaching 12 inches though, which scares me... he's now the same size as my biggest Goliath

Yeah maybe its just different stages of growth..idk. But yeah he's just going to keep growing and growing and growing....

hopefully the goliaths grow more once they can fit more in their kind of streamlined bellies.....otherwise the dorado might be handing them their lunch soon enough which would be a problem.

lol! you aint kidding, the Dorado's are beasts! but i must say now that the goliaths are all 10+ inches for a few months now, i have noticed they've become a bit less skittish, and more aggressive as far as eating... they no longer get afraid when i dump food in and the feeding frenzy begins, they are usually right in the middle of it, so hopefully this continues in the big tank
