Armatus Keepers out there ....

i have stuffed pellets in the silversides/smelt, and they've eaten that no problem ... i'm just being stubborn and want them to eat whatever i put in the tank, and i want the staple to be just pellets. The new vampire just bit, but spit out a sinking carnivore pellet so i'm confident he will eat them soon, but my other fish, most of which i've had for over a year are being stubborn. The tigers and the goonches i think will eat them eventually, but the datnoids are so stubborn ... wish i had another tank to put them in, cause i bet if i did they would eat pellets. its like people, they're in a routine, and to break that routine i've got to change everything. Patience i guess, hopefully will work ....

got another fish eating pellets .... my bigger 14-15 inch goonch cat ate some today, although i figured the catfish wouldnt be too bad, and the pleco seems to be eating the pellets so hopefully he'll stop attaching to the goonches ... so thats 3-4 out of 30 fish .... its a start! lol!

so much easier with new fish ... have had the baby Armatus for 3 days and he's eating pellets, while the 6 baby dats in there with him, 4 AT's, and 2 IT 's are not, and i was trying to get them on pellets for about a week before i got the Armatus. Good news though, for sure

hahaha hopefully they'll give in soon. sorry if I missed, what's your current stock? you've got some good luck with training payaras ;)

Yeah, pretty happy about the armatus going for pellets so quickly, but of course, as i've learned through my experiences with Murphy and his laws, 1 good thing usually means bad things are on the way! The armatus
s doing great, he's in my 40 gallon breeder with 4 small AT dats, and 2 small IT dats, and 1 goldfish for pellet training purposes. My fluval on the 40 wasnt flowing like it should have about 1-2 weeks ago, tank clouded up and smelled a bit, but ammonia/nitrites were ok .... i added new carbon, put in some diff media to help flow, and the tank looks great now, and added a water circulator for the introduction of the payara .... now yesterday i see the little AT dats flashing, and 1 has a severly clouded eye, just what i need :( tank has been running super clean for a week, so its weird that now they are showing problems ... not to mention how succeptable the armatus is to these types of issues makes me super nervous, so i'll basically do a 25% water change daily, dose with salt, increased temp to 83.5 and hope .... just unbelievable .... in my 220 i have 3 GATF's, 1 VATF all 8-11 inches, 1 tarpon 14 inch, 5 NTT dats, 2 IT dats, a mala wolf, a freshwater stone fish, a jade golby i think, a royal pleco, and 2 Goonch cats .... gonna need a HUGE tank soon, but everyones good for now, as long as they eat the damn pellets soon!!!! lol!

i should revise my prior statement, i realized 1-2 weeks ago that the fluval wasnt running at max flow, so who knows how long ... tank was a little cloudy for a couple weeks, i figured it was cause i needed new carbon, but it was probably because of the filter, and the consequences are now a few sick fish ... if it aint 1 thing, its another i guess ... i take it in stride though, as a learning experience, unfortunate for the fish though, but i think they'll be ok

My opinion after trying to keep them many years ago is the Armatus and red tails need custom tanks big enough to handle the occasional runs that will always slam there head on tank side or top. 8X3X4 with 1 foot left on top for the jumps.

My largest two armatus are 17 and 15 inch now- they eat like pigs. the 17" one can take a 11" trout whole!!
I had a shock the other day when the big ones tooth was bent and it couldn't shut his mouth!. - I decided to get him out and get the pliers to it.
luckly the tooth came off in the net. Ive kept it as a souvenir .Its about1.5-2".
The strangest thing was - it grew another in 2 days!!- i couldn't believe what i was seeing, how can that be possible.

it's natural that they shed their teeth. the first time that happened to me, I freaked and grabbed a pair of pliers.. didn't do so well for my newly acquired payara. next time, you should just let them be.. even if they can't close their mouth lol :)
