Armatus Nose Injured

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
good luck to ya

This is why I opt to raise mine with other fish. I can put my hand in the tank and I have 2 that get kinda skittish but the other 3 are fine WITH my hand in there...

I have an Aro that paces the top and Odoe that dart around.

IF you ever plan on housng it with other fish I believe it's best to do this from the get go..... Keeping fish that don't tend to do the whole human interaction thing solo seems to yield kinda skittish results in my opinion, which if you think about it would be perfectly normal cause they are used to ZERO movement around them except much smaller then them "food items"...... Things moving that are bigger then them, they have a tendency to run from, where if you have things in there moving all the time they aren't as scared of movement in general.

i got your point DB. i also know what you're talking about coz its what I have been doing with my other fishes. He's not solo in the tank, he has a ORINO and a HEMIODUS ARGENTEUS with him. Im waiting for it to get to 6-7" then he's gonna be in my 3-Black Arow tank with Tigrinus. Im thinking its not skittishness since it doesnt do it at daytime. He only does his thing at night till the break of dawn. I tried covering the entire tank and no lights, he still does it, even with light, dim light, or no light at all. that's what's bothering me. why does he do it?

ok. after weeks of observing, he really does this thing ONLY at night. doesnt matter if the lights are on or off. maybe thats his thing.

im gonna put melafix now.. since the upped temp and salt is not working for the nose because he keeps doing it. half dosage only?? btw, he almost 5" now, its only been a month from 2.75". damn!

HELP GUYS! I REALLY DONT KNOW WHAT IM DOING WRONG ANYMORE!
ive tried almost everything but my armatus still rubs his nose on the glass ONLY at night! i already put melafix, salt and temp upped. its not gonna heal until he stops this rubbing thing.

he's in a 60 gal bare, nothing but powerhead with air bubbles. with a 3" orino. it doesnt bother him, the orino is just scared of him.

ive tried these thing but no changes.

1. no lights/dimmed lights/bright lights, no tankmates for a couple of days, with substrate, with decors, tank all sides covered.

2. took out everything, substrate and all except filter, powerhead and air bubbles, still no change.

3. tried with tankmates, tinfoil, orino, smaller NTT, still nothing.

it seems all of these things doesnt matter to him. he doesnt give a damn about lighting, substrate, tankmates(they're all afraid of him).
he WILL do his rubbing every night!!! :irked:

dunno what to do anymore! PLEASE HELP!:(:(:(

Some Payara are just not meant for captivity. I had a Rhaph that did the same thing you speak of. There was no stopping it. Eventually it became evident it was never going to heal and later in life had problems keeping both fangs aligned. Poo bear died with 1/2 a snout.

If you've allready messed with lighting (tank AND room) and didn't get anywhere I'd try a bigger tank and see if it continues to persist.

Most Characins seem to find comfort in numbers. Maybe he's just hella desperate for some Characin company.... LOL

ill try this later today.. lets see what happens.

i like the sound of that! but scary! im taking the risk of having 1 or both killed if i have another armatus in the tank. but im also seriously considering this thats why i keep asking in my other thread, who was able to do it succesfully..

what's weird is he ONLY DOES IT AT NIGHT.:irked:
i understand most fishes are active at night but this one is just crazy.
so if its not meant for captivity, how come he only acts weird at night?
he's totally fine during the day.

not trying to be a smartass DB, im just really curious.
whats making it do its his thing ONLY at night????
i can get your point that some characins are just not for captivity.
if this is the case on this armatus, why only do it at night?

oh btw, i added 3 6" tinfoils in the 60 and 3 smaller NTTs. just want to see
if those will distract him from doing his thing tonight. if not, he's going to the big tank tomorrow.
