Has anyone out there gotten their armatus off live food yet? R1? Shoefreak?

Shows no interest in nothing but live :irked: However, I haven't really tried to ween him off live. At least w/the Redtails they would strike @ freeze dried krill. But the Armatus shows no interest.

I just added them back in my tank the other day. They are still a bit stressed and banged up from the small confinment I had to put them in.

Damn the armatus looks like such a stud next to the other payara. I can't wait for mine to get that size. I'm assuming you got the bigger 10-12" ones. Mine is about 7" now and also only eating live. I have him in with some red hook silver dollars and I fed them shrimp last night. As I was watching he actually took a few half ass swipes of trying to steal the shrimp out of the red hooks mouth which isn't much but I will take it. Let me know if you make any progress thanks for the update.

You guys ever try jigging the piece of shrimp in front of thier face? That is how I got my grass pickerel off live food. It took alot of starving too. Oh yea I just used a thin piece of thread...and make sure it breaks off when they strike.

I haven't tried very hard to wean off live as of yet but will definately keep this in mind as a tactic to try..

mine shows no interest unless it is alive. i throw in big goldfishes that the other tankmates can not take down (ST, Nile and Chinese Perch) which it sometimes just kills. I tried using a tong and waving that dead fish around like it is still alive and it will not even look at it.

I've tried starving and waving some pieces of shirmp also and it showed no interest.

i am starting to think they will only take live food...:irked: but i guess i'll keep trying as i hate doing feeder runs...

haha. how many feeders do u buy at one go?

Try and use a piece of thread. It works. Thought I would never get my pickerel off live foods but when I starved him about two weeks and wiggled the shrimp around on the thread he went for it. Took about 5-6 trys but it worked and now I actually got him to take a pellet once! Also once they strike NEVER feed them live again. If they strike that is when you know they will take. Mine struck about 5 times then ate it on the 6th. Good luck.
