Yes Trev, I think I read somewhere that a main staple for them is pirahna, at least the smaller Serrasalmus species. I don't know how true that is (the part about pirahna being a large part of their diets), but I can already tell that the armatus would not accept anything close to the same size as him in his vicinity, unless it was larger than him.
I am actually building two tanks that will ultimately be joined into one when I need the more space for the guy. Ultimately it will be 10' x 4' x 30." Right now I have it constructed out to 5' x 4' x 30," in almost a square shape. This seems to be more than enough room for him until he gets slightly larger than yours now.
How big is yours at this point? Over 24"?
KRichardson:
I enjoy keeping solo species alone. The pirahna is alone, though I may sell it soon (They like to shoal together). We'll see. I never though about buying DMack's, but did note it's sale, and told friends about it. I would never have kept them together had I bought another. All the talk about keeping them together is a pipedream I'm afraid. It's only a matter of time until the alpha goes after the others.
There are a few on the boards who claim to be doing it successfully, but how happy are the fish? They are probably constantly stressed, and to house them successfully together would probably require a tank of at least 5000 gallons. Especially at full size. Putting three or two armatus together in a tank at 12 inches and stepping back and saying that you solved compatibility issues is ridiculous. Anyone can ram 100 feeders a day into a tank and keep the fish so full they don't even need to think about eating one another.
I am not here to condone right or wrong, but I am more into trying to make the fish's life as pleasant as I can, considering I have already relegated him to a small tank...haha.
