I think they just feel like they have to compete for food when there are other fish in the tank and that's why they eat more aggressively.
When am I gonna get that next feeder, well I better eat this one before that dude gets it.
Don't you think that these things have stopped growing because of the size of the tank they are in? I would be happy to keep one @ 20".

M.Carfi... I think that is possible, but it depends on the amount of water changes just my opinion.

There are many things that can infuence the growth of a fish. Size of the aquarium, quality of the water, quantity of food and quality of food. Nitrate has an impact on growth. The larger the aquarium the cleaner the water generally is.

There is a known issue with Goldfish and thiamine, This is actually a problem with a wide range of foods. The following artical is a great read. Although it is a long term issue that takes along time to take affect.

I have noticed an increased growth rate in my fish including my ATF now I feed Trout meat as it doesn't contain Thiamine. I am pretty sure fish meat has more fish building proteins than shrimp meat.

I know the next batch I get a hold of I will be feeding UNcleaned head on smelt to.

Thier diet consits of 100% fish in the wild right? I think aside from feeders this would be the best bet.

What are your thoughts Trev?

deff grow faster on live. full smelt is the next best bet...

DB, i bet you hit it on the head with the group thing...

Vamp, i wondered if sex playes a role like rays and other fish. Mine has only grown from 8- about 10" in the last 5 or so months. I fed feeders for about a month in that time the rest was shrimp until last week.

I agree that there diet in the wild would be fish...100% i have been feeding Whole smelt head and all.

i think it does a little

i usually feed my 3 5inch scombs once a week using fathead minnows. around 2inchs long. i put about 2 dozen in each week. seems to work. i just picked up a load of feeder platies. ill wait for them to get around an inch+ before i use them. maybe get lucky and they will swawn.
