Armatus tank size for life.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Not even close enough to house an Armatus. My 8 foot x 3 foot x 30" 450 gallon wasn't even big enough in the end when he was 18".

I was thinking maybe for a single armatus 300 gallon. That's what i've heard from other people. bigger the better of course. Don't you have alot of fish in with your armatus though?

Krich don't you have a 200 something gallon tank that hold like a 18+ armatus?

LOL,not quite, its a 180...I will be moving him to my 265 pretty soon.

That's what you said last year!! :P JK But great armatus anyways. You really got to show off the beast more often.

LMAO..Did I really?...guess its time I stopped being lazy and got it done...Nice av by the way.Too bad they didnt win.

Here was my experience...Imported 4 Armatus from the U.S. and sold one to a buddy. I raised the remaining 3 in a 150 gallon until they were big enough to go into the 450 gallon. Once in the 450 gallon they began to go after each others eyes. I lost one in a quarantine tank while I was treating it's eye injury due to cramped quarters(stress). . So my first point is to remember when treating an armatus in a quarantine tank make sure it's bigger then 90 gallon. The second armatus that had the eye injury was cured and ready to go back to the big tank. When I went into the room to retrieve the Armatus the fish was spooked by me just entering the room and raced from one side of the tank to the other and crashed into the glass. Another common death amongst Armatus owners.(race of death) Now I was down to my last armatus in the 450 gallon. He did good for a while and was up to 18" long. He then started to get stressed by my lenticulata pike as they would chase him once in a while. He then started eating less! I got ride of the pike but then the stingrays and black arowanas seemed to be stressing him out to the point he jumped through the overflow screen and landed on the ground. Another common death among armatus owners.(Jump of death)
So fast forward a couple years I found an Armatus by mistake at the lfs and scored it for $60. I put it in my 230 gallon with some mild manner fish or so I thought. I caught the red neck severums chasing the Armatus to the point it was to late for him to recover from the stress. He stopped eating and eventually died.
Armatus are actually fragile fish and need a big tank and if you are going to have tank mates then make sure you pick wisely. It may work for a while but may not work forever.

P.S. The Armatus I sold to my buddy lived the longest as it was kept in a 230 gallon basically by itself and was fed strictly feeder fish. It was then sold to another member on here and was kept in at least a 1000 gallon tank and grew in excess of 20". It eventually jumped out of the tank and died.

Tragic..I am on my third, and I told myself last and final, armatus after losing the first two....The armies I have had were pretty calm unless I tried to to net them lol. They were not nearly as skittish as some of my other fish but the first two I had on different occasions and they both seemed to just drop dead when they were close to a foot in length....no signs of stress or glass banging.Number two was actually with a trio of red tail tats and I came home one day to find all of them dead and after that I told myself not to get anymore.I was tempted and couldn't resist getting my current one and it's been smooth sailing at around three years now.

Amazing post and I really appreciate it very much. I will be moving My Armatus to a bigger tank this summer and keeping him solo. I will take all precautions I can to make it work. My boy is my dream fish! I can understand everything you said and see the potential of tragedy every day. I will never take for granted again that my Armatus is bold.

I have 7x2.5x2.5 tank, my fish are 7 Armatus, 1 Tatauaia, 1 GATF, 1 Curupira and 1 Odoe..

So far only my Armies are aggressive, specially the 14 incher, the other six is only at 9 inch..

What you guys think? ;)
